David Patrick coolly holed a 6ft birdie putt on the last green to win the North-east District Open amateur golf championship at Newmachar for the second year in a row.

Patrick, third at the half-way stage of the 72-hole tournament, put together steady third and fourth rounds of 70 and 71 for a three-under-par total of 285.

He pipped by one stroke 18-year-old Scottish boy international Christopher Campbell from Grantown on Spey. Campbell had moved into contention with a third-round 68 and closed with a 72 for 286.

Campbell was left to rue a lost-ball double bogey 6 at the thirteenth. He birdied the sixteenth but the damage had been done. Halfway leader Philip Strachan (Newmachar), who had equalled the Newmachar Hawkshill amateur course record of 67 in the second round, thanks to an outward half of 31, faded back down the field with closing rounds of 80 and 79 for joint sixth place on 297.
