Dr Agnes Jean Herring, who, for more than 30 years was a senior gynaecologist and obstetrician in Dundee, has died at the age of 88.

She was born in Edinburgh and grew up in St Andrews, where her father, Professor PT Herring, held the Chandos Chair of Physiology at the university.

After attending St Andrews University, she graduated in medicine in 1933. She studied for four years at Dundee Royal, Bristol Royal, Glasgow Royal Hospital for Sick Children, and Glasgow Royal Maternity Hospital. In 1937, she was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and took up a post at Dundee Royal. In 1949, she was appointed consultant in charge of obstetrics and gynaecology at Maryfield Hospital, and worked under Professor Margaret Fairlie in Dundee University's department of obstetrics.
