Ray Stewart has been sacked as Forfar manager after his side's embarrassing 5-1 defeat by Montrose in the Scottish Cup.

Saturday's first-round loss to the third division side was the last straw for David McGregor, the Forfar chairman. He said: ''We have won one game in the last 11 and the cup loss was unacceptable.''

Montrose now face an awkward trip to Highland League side Keith in the second round on December 11. Fellow Highlanders Huntly progressed to a second-round meeting with East Fife after a shock 3-1 win over Peterhead. The Huntly captain, Russell Guild, said: ''We rode our luck at times but you can't fault our effort. We have proved the bookies wrong.''

Cove Rangers became the third Highland League side in the next round with a comfortable 4-1 home win over Dalbeattie Star.

The Cove manager, John Sheran, is now promising to make life difficult when Morton come calling.

He said: ''We'll do our best to give Morton a game.''

Dumbarton came from behind at Cowdenbeath to earn a home tie against Berwick Rangers.
