Retrofest was due to take place in Richmond Park, near Glasgow Green, next month, but will now be held at Loudoun Castle family theme park in Ayrshire.

A row has erupted over why the festival was moved, with the organisers claiming chemical “contamination” in the ground at Richmond Park was to blame -- a view that Glasgow City Council refutes.

The council said it was its duty to inform the organisers of a history of contamination in the area, but said it posed no risk.

A council spokesman said last night: “As is routine when a major event is to be held, the council carried out a preliminary survey.

“It was noted that there has been a history of contamination in the area due to an old chemical works being located nearby. However, any contamination would not have posed a risk as no excavations were planned for the site.”

The organisers of the 80s music festival said the chemicals were “an issue” for their insurers.

Music fans must now get a £13 return shuttle bus from the city to the event on the last weekend of August.
