DEREK Stark, Boroughmuir's international wing, has dropped out of
Scotland's squad for the tour to Argentina later this month. So has his
fellow cap Iain Morrison.
Their respective places have gone to Chris Dalgleish, the Gala wing,
and Fergus Wallace, the 29-year-old GHK breakaway forward and Glasgow
captain.
Stark has had a recurring groin injury, and though it is not expected
to prevent him from playing for Boroughmuir in the Alloa Cup final
against Dundee High School FP at Meggetland this afternoon, he could not
be certain of being fully fit throughout the tour. Morrison has not
recovered from a knee injury.
Wallace has had 30 games for Glasgow since his district debut in 1988,
and though he has been in national squads in recent years, his only
selection in a team at that level was when he played in the Scotland
Development XV beaten 31-12 by the All Blacks in November.
He was also in Scotland's Hong Kong sevens squad.
Dalgleish's promotion comes at the end of a season of mixed fortunes,
including two tries on his debut for the South against North and
Midlands in October. His jaw was broken when, like Wallace, he played
for the Development XV against the All Blacks, and after an under-21 cap
against Wales in January, the Gala youngster was out of rugby until late
March because of glandular fever.
Since his return, though unable to break into Gala's seven, he enjoyed
success in the shorter game last month. He was in the Pringle
President's winning team at Hawick sevens and the victorious Saltires in
the Ulster international tournament last Monday.
Dundee will be attempting to win two trophies this afternoon, meeting
Dunfermline in the Tennents Midlands Cup final at Cupar as well as
defending the Alloa Cup against Boroughmuir. In the day's third final,
as the preliminary to Meggetland's main piece, Forrester FP and Garnock
play for the Castlemaine XXXX Trophy at 1pm.
Naturally, Dundee send their first team to Meggetland, with Mike
Cousin and Nigel Douglas back in the threequarter line. Boroughmuir can
recall Sean Lineen, Robbie Smith, and Grant Wilson. All five missed the
semi-final last week.
It will be the last time the Alloa and Castlemaine competitions are
contested, at least in those guises. The sponsorship has run its course,
and the winners may even be allowed to keep the crystal trophies. Final

Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
