A teenage pedestrian has been killed and a driver taken to hospital with shock following a road accident.

James Martin Watson, 18, from Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire, was struck by a Fiat Punto driving southbound on the A77 Glasgow to Stranraer road, near to the Bellfield Interchange, at around 10.40pm last night.

Emergency services attended but Mr Watson died at the scene.

The 28-year-old male driver was uninjured but was taken to Crosshouse Hospital, near Kilmarnock, for treatment for shock.

The road was closed for several hours as an investigation into the crash was carried out.

Mr Watson's relatives have been informed and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Constable Jim Yair, of Road Policing at Irvine, is appealing for witnesses.
