ONE of Scotland's busiest streets was sealed off during the evening rush hour after a man suffered a suspected heart attack and died on a bus.

Emergency services were called to Leith Walk, the main route out of Edinburgh, at about 5.40pm yesterday.

Fellow passengers had raised the alarm over the condition of a passenger who was travelling on the top deck of the number 16 bus.

Paramedics boarded the vehicle to treat the man following the incident near a Tesco store, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident took place near the McDonald Road junction.

Leith Walk was closed and traffic was diverted to surrounding streets while the incident was dealt with.

At least nine services operated by Lothian Buses were affected by the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesman confirmed the fatality and said that they were working to establish the circumstances of the man's death, which are being treated as unexplained.

At this stage there is nothing to indicate there are any suspicious circumstances.

In a statement, Police Scotland said: "Police are currently working to establish the circumstances of the man's death, which is being treated as unexplained.

"At this stage there is nothing to indicate there are any suspicious circumstances."

The force appealed to anyone who has any information regarding this incident to contact Police Scotland on 101.
