Michael Stewart, the former Hearts captain, has confirmed his intention to stand as an MP for the SNP next May.

The 33-year, who began his career with Manchester United and went on to play for both Hearts and rivals Hibs, is bidding to take the Edinburgh West seat held by LibDem Mike Crockart since 2010.

Stewart, who won four Scottish caps and is now seen as a regular TV pundit, tweeted today: "Delighted to announce I'm standing for selection as SNP candidate for Edinburgh West in the general election. If selected I aim to win."

He added: "Greatest privilege of my life to wear Scotland strip. Now I seek the backing of constituency of my birth to represent you & Scotland at WM."
