THE Orange Order have been granted permission to hold their Orangefest event in George Square this weekend.

Members of Glasgow City Council's licensing committee unanimously agreed to grant organisers a licence at a meeting today.

The committee heard from representatives from the Orange Order and the police before reaching their decision.

No extra conditions have been attached to the licence.

A petition calling for Glasgow City Council to refuse the licence attracted over 20,000 signatures.

It is understood Police Scotland, who previously categorised the event as low risk, have decided to increase policing following public reaction to the event.
