COMPOSER James MacMillan and music veteran Van Morrison have been knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Dr MacMillan's music is widely performed around the world by performers ranging from top international orchestras to local church and community choirs.

One of his compositions was a new choral piece which was sung when Pope Benedict XVI conducted mass at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow in 2010.

Commenting on his knighthood, the composer, known for his outspoken views as well as his many musical accomplishments, said: "I am totally delighted to receive this honour.

"I am especially pleased that the world of music, and contemporary composition in particular, will receive greater focus and recognition as a result."

Sir James, who was previously awarded a CBE in 2004, said the knighthood had made him feel "encouraged and re-energised" in his work particularly his involvement with The Cumnock Tryst which sets out to bring active music-making back to the area in Ayrshire where he grew up.

Van Morrison, whose unique meshing of blues, country, soul and folk has won him worldwide fame and millions of fans, was honoured for his services to music and tourism in Northern Ireland, the inspiration for many of his hits.

Professor Anne Glover, the former chief scientific advisor for the Scottish Government, has been made a dame while bio-scientist Peter Downes, who identified the role of the drug Lithium in treating manic depression, was also knighted.

Professor Downes, the principal of Dundee University, said his knighthood was an award for the whole institution.

He said: "I am immensely proud to have been a member of the University of Dundee community for over 25 years, since I arrived here in 1989, and feel extremely privileged to lead the university.

"I have seen many great things happen here and I am sure we will see many more in future."

A number of famous faces have joined the list of recipients of Queen's Birthday Honours.

American actor and artistic director of the Old Vic theatre Kevin Spacey said he feels like "an adopted son" after being awarded an honorary knighthood for his services to British theatre and international culture.

Edinburgh-born BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Nicky Campbell was awarded an OBE for services to children.

Campbell, a regular on TV and radio for years, has spoken openly about his experience of being adopted and is a patron of the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF). Last year he fronted the TV series Wanted: A Family of My Own.

He said: "I am genuinely flabbergasted and if I have in any small way helped raise the profile of adoption and fostering then I'm supremely proud."

Caroline Selkirk, chief executive of the BAAF, said the charity was "delighted" he had been honoured.

She said: "Nicky is passionate about adoption and the issues surrounding all looked-after children and we are thrilled this passion and his hard work has been recognised."

Steven Moffat, the driving force behind hit TV shows Sherlock and Doctor Who, said he was "just really, really happy" to get an OBE for services to drama.

The Paisley-born writer and producer said: "I never thought I would get something like this. I'm astonished and more thrilled than I ever thought someone like me would be. I'm not the least bit cynical, or the least bit trying to be cool about it. I'm just really, really happy."

Philippa Langley, the Edinburgh-based historian whose work led to the discovery and reburial of Richard III's remains received an MBE.

She and John Ashdown-Hill were both given the honours for spearheding a campaign to locate the remains of the Plantagenet monarch in 2009, eventually tracking him to a car park in Leicester.

Mrs Langley said she was happy she had managed to bring the 15th century king into the world spotlight.

She said: "I'm honoured to receive this award. I'm delighted the discovery of King Richard has ignited worldwide interest in his story.

"For the very first time, this historical figure is being read about widely to understand the facts surrounding his life and times and to question the received wisdom and ages-old mythology surrounding him."

Ebola nurse Will Pooley, 30, who was evacuated to London after contracting the deadly virus in Sierra Leone last year, only to return to his life-saving work just months after recovering, was given an MBE for his services in tackling the outbreak in Africa.
