Sunderland have completed the signing of Celtic right-back Adam Matthews for a fee of £2m.

The Black Cats confirmed the move last night, with the Welsh internationalist finalising a four-year deal a little more than 24 hours after the two clubs had agreed a fee.

Head coach Dick Advocaat said on the club's website: "We know that we need quality players to improve competition for places in the side, so Adam is a welcome addition to our squad and we are very pleased to welcome him to Sunderland."

Matthews spent four years with Celtic after being signed by Neil Lennon from Cardiff in 2011. The 23-year-old made more than 100 appearances for the Glasgow side and won the league in each of his four seasons at the club.

Celtic have already signed a new right-back to fill the void, with Saidy Janko arriving from Manchester United to provide competition for Mikael Lustig.
