A pensioner is fighting for his life in hospital after careering off his motorbike on a motorway.

The crash happened on the M74 southbound in Biggar, South Lanarkshire, at around 8.45pm on Sunday.

The 69-year-old came off his motorbike after losing control but no other vehicles were involved.

Emergency services attended the scene and the man was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Staff at the hospital describe his condition as critical.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Around 8.45pm a 69-year-old man was riding his motorbike on the M74 southbound at Biggar when it appeared to lose control.

"The man came off his bike and was seriously injured.

"Emergency services attended and the man was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where staff describe his condition as critical."

Sergeant John Tait added: “Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact officers at Motherwell Road Policing Unit via the 101 number.”
