Maternity units in the west of Scotland welcomed more than a dozen Christmas babies yesterday.

The first in Scotland was born at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley. Baby girl Leavi arrived at 12.14am and weighed 7lb 13oz.

Her mum, Kerry Docherty from Paisley, said: “I couldn’t stop crying when I first held her in my arms. She’s just the perfect Christmas present.”

Two other babies were born at the same maternity unity at 1.38am and 1.52am.

Christmas Day was also busy at the Princess Royal Maternity in Glasgow city centre.

Five babies arrived, including Hollie Dempsie’s son Kayden Ferrari Dempsie, born at 2.35am weighing 6lb 8oz.

Hollie, 22, from Glasgow, said: “This is my first and I feel absolutely fantastic. I was actually expecting him on December 29, so he was early.

“It was a big shock but a lovely surprise. I went into labour two days ago and I had an early Christmas dinner because after my waters broke I knew I’d be in hospital on Christmas Day.”

Laura Fitzsimmons, 25, from Lanark, had her first baby, Sophia, at 4.29am and she weighed 5lb 9oz.

She said: “I’m very excited and feeling very positive. My family brought some mince pies and pigs in blankets to the hospital but we’re going to have our Christmas dinner on the 28th, after we’ve settled back in.”

The first Christmas baby born at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Maternity Unit was Franki Robertson.

Leeanne Robertson’s little girl, her first child, was twelve days late and weighed 7lb 14oz.

The 20-year-old hairdresser from Yoker said: “All through the twelve days of Christmas I was wondering when she was going to be born.

“I was actually due to be induced on Christmas Day but I had her myself at 3.31am. I feel fine but very tired.”

Sister Karen McGill said the maternity unit was a busy place yesterday.

“We had six babies between midnight and midday,” she said. “It was a reasonably busy night and there will be more to come before Christmas Day is over.”

At Wishaw General Hospital only one baby was born in the early hours of Christmas Day.

Maternity co-ordinator Heather Weir said: “The first Christmas baby arrived at 2.20am followed by another at 1.30pm. We were quite quiet. It was quite nice for all the staff.”
