Theresa May has hit out at Nicola Sturgeon over independence.

No 10 criticised the First Minister's comments in an article in the Sunday Herald at the weekend to mark the second anniversary of the 2014 referendum.

The SNP leader suggested that oil, national wealth and balance sheets were less important than self-governance for Scotland.

She also said that self-governance "transcends the issue of Brexit".

She added: "The case for full self-government ultimately transcends the issues of Brexit, of oil, of national wealth and balance sheets and of passing political fads and trends.”

No 10 attacked the use of the phrase "passing political fads".

A Downing Street spokesman said: “I’m not sure you would describe Brexit, oil and the economy as ‘passing fads’. These are fundamental issues about what Britain is and what it is dealing with.”
