Bishop Mone served as a priest in Glasgow before being appointed Bishop of Paisley in 1988. He retired in 2004, with Bishop Philip Tartaglia taking over his position.

He frequently criticised Dungavel Detention Centre, a holding unit for asylum seekers, during his episcopate and his retirement.

He renewed his appeals for the closure of the facility in 2004.

Bishop of Paisley John Keenan said: "We announce the sad news that Bishop John Mone died peacefully this morning just before 6am in the Holy Rosary Residence, Greenock.

"He was taken unwell an hour or so before and passed away tranquilly.
