Scotland’s most celebrated chef has launched a new luxury lifestyle label in collaboration with one of the country’s highest-profile designers.
Andrew Fairlie, chef-patron of his eponymous restaurant at Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, which is the only one in Scotland to have two Michelin stars, has joined forces with the internationally acclaimed Iona Crawford Atelier based in Glasgow to create Our Secret Garden, a range of fine-bone china ceramics, luxury linens and velvets, fine-art prints and wallpapers in 11 different patterns inspired by the privately-owned 19th-century walled garden and glasshouses in which the chef grows vegetables, leaves, herbs, fruit and flowers for his daily menus.
The historic south-facing garden, built in the late 1800s, retains original features of Victoriana and was once run by a team of 11 full-time gardeners to supply the estate house kitchens all year round. It was disused for 40 years before Fairlie took it over from the current owner two years ago, and its location remains undisclosed.
The unusual collection of kaleidoscopic designs is the only one of its kind in the world, and will be shown at the Decorex International Design Festival in London later this month, following a short exhibition at the Stallan Brand architecture studios in Glasgow next week [September 7].
Perth-born Fairlie, who left school at 15 and is now one of only 160 Grands Chefs du Monde, said: “Our Secret Garden label is a way of showing our garden to the world in an unexpected way. We won’t open a second restaurant, so this this an extension of the restaurant here.”
Stirling-born Iona Crawford, a graduate of Edinburgh College of Art who has been hailed as Vogue’s One to Watch and has shown her interiors collections in Paris, Tokyo, London, Beijing and New York, said: “I wanted to do something that hadn’t been done before and working with Andrew has been a wonderful journey.”
