KATIE Archibald claimed the first of what could be many Commonwealth Games gold medals when she left Australia’s Rebecca Wiasak in her wake in the final of the women’s 3000m individual pursuit. The versatile rider from Milngavie, whose only previous medal was a bronze in the points race in Glasgow 2014, seems set to be one of the big Scottish success stories of the game.

She also beat her big brother onto the medal rostrum, taking to the track a matter of 30 minutes before her older brother John takes to the Anna Meares velodrome to battle it out for a gold medal in the men’s 4,000m individual pursuit, with a silver already in the bag. Katie has four more chances to add to her medal tally in the Gold Coast, with the scratch race, points race, time trial and road race still to come.
