THE broadcasting watchdog Ofcom has given a provisional green light to BBC Scotland's plans for a new digital channel.

Plans for the BBC Scotland channel, with its own evening news bulletin, were unveiled last year.

An Ofcom statement says the corporation may proceed with the launch, subject to further consultation.

OFCOM TO ANALYSE NEW CHANNEL PLANS

It said: "Following a careful review of the BBC’s plans and research with viewers in Scotland, our provisional decision is that the BBC may proceed with the launch of the new channel.

"We are now seeking views from interested or affected organisations and individuals on our provisional decision."

The closing date for these views on the provisional green light is May 18.

The final decision by Ofcom will be made by July this year.
