AN Edinburgh university has begun legal action to get rid of travellers that have set up camp on its grounds.

Heriot-Watt University decided to start action at the Court of Session after the travellers "took occupation" of part of the university land on Friday.

The university has lodged a petition in court for an interdict to have the travellers and their caravans removed.

The legal notice states: "They have no right or entitlement to occupy the property. They have acted in a way that the court might have prohibted by interdict.

A spokeswoman for Heriot-Watt University, said: “The university is following a legal process to remove an unauthorised travelling site from the Research Park of our campus.”
