Sir Alex Ferguson is in a serious condition in hospital.

The former Manchester United manager was reportedly taken to Macclesfield district hospital at 9am this morning.

It is though that the 76-year-old suffered a brain haemorrhage but underwent emergency surgery today.

Manchester United said in a statement: "Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery today for a brain haemorrhage.

"The procedure has gone very well but he needs a period of intensive care to optimise his recovery. His family request privacy in this matter."

His son, Darren Ferguson, was due to be in the dugout for Doncaster today in the final game of the League One Season but was absent because of his father's condition.
