A HIGHLAND estate which encompasses the site of one of the Jacobites' most stunning victories has gone on sale with a price tag of £5m.

The rambling 2,390-acre Urrard Estate, near Pitlochry, includes the area where the Battle of Killiecrankie was fought between supporters of James VII and the new government of William of Orange during the first rising.

The Jacobites achieved an unexpected victory but suffered heavy casualties, including the loss of their leader, John Graham, Viscount Dundee, known as ‘Bonnie Dundee’.

Almost 2,000 men were killed in the 30-minute battle, which saw the Jacobites employ the famous Highland charge against lines of infantry led by General Hugh McKay.

Dundee's forces were able to smash through the government ranks, but he was hit by a musket ball beneath his breastplate and died on the battlefield.

Claverhouse’s Stone, found at Urrard, is said to mark the spot where he died.

At the heart of the estate lies the 10-bedroom House of Urrard, a B-listed, Scots-Jacobean mansion house dating from 1831 which has been comprehensively renovated by the current owners during the last 15 years.

The new owners will also have the opportunity to try for a "McNab" by bagging a grouse, a salmon and a stag as fishing, shooting and stalking opportunities are all available within the estate.

Robert McCulloch, head of estates and farm agency for Strutt & Parker in Scotland, said: “Providing the opportunity to enjoy the full range of Scotland’s world-renowned field sports and with a fine principal house to host family and friends, we expect Urrard Estate to magnetise interest from several continents.”
