New Morton manager Jonatan Johansson admits he has been a fan of the club since boyhood idol Marko Rajamäki made the move to Cappielow over 20 years ago.

Johansson’s fellow Finn signed for 'Ton in 1994 and became a firm fans' favourite in the three years he was at the Greenock outfit.

Former Rangers striker and assistant manager Johansson was appointed as Ray McKinnon’s successor last week and is set to make his dugout debut in Saturday’s Championship clash away to Dundee United.

And the 43-year-old admits he is well aware of Morton’s recent history having kept tabs on Rajamäki.

He said: “It’s an important club for me and I’ve had a connection to Greenock Morton for a long time through various channels and that’s why I’m proud to be in this position.

“I come from just outside Turku and TPS was Marko’s club - he was a childhood star in that team and broke through really early with his long blonde hair.

“He was one of my favourite players and I went to go and watch the club most home games.

“When he got the move here I started following Morton a little bit so there was that connection.

“I got to know him a little bit because he was my manager at TPS and he is someone that I could speak to for advice.”
