THOUSANDS of Scots are still without power in the wake of Storm Ali more than 30 hours after the hurricane force winds of Storm Ali hit the nation.

Scottish and Southern Electricity Network and SP Energy Networks reported 80,900 had been hit by power cuts since 10am on Wednesday.

Now SP Energy Networks, which has had to deal with the vast majority of the issues say that 2,500 homes are still in black-out.

The majority of customers impacted are in the Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Borders areas.

An SP Energy Networks spokesman said "good progress" had ben made on Thursday but enginees had faced a "significant amount of damage" to the network with a large number of trees uprooted.

He said: “Over the day yesterday, Storm Ali caused widespread damage to the electricity network across central and southern Scotland. Wind brought down trees and blew debris on to power lines, damaging poles and overhead equipment.

“High winds across most of the day and in to the evening yesterday created very difficult working conditions. Blocked roads and travel issues also caused additional difficulties for our engineers.

“We will continue to work hard to reconnect customers as quickly as we can.”
