Dumfries House estate played host to hundreds of runners of all ages on Saturday.

A ten-kilometre race and a two-kilometre fun run for children were the first of their kind to be held on the 2000-acre Ayrshire estate.

Dumfries House remained untouched for 250 years before it was saved for the nation by Prince Charles in 2007. It now operates as a tourist attraction and education hub.

Duncan Chan, assistant manager of Dumfries House Outdoor Residential Centre and part of the team behind organising the event, said: “Hundreds of runners came to Dumfries House for our first 10k running event and it was some sight to see them all filling the normally-quiet roads and paths across the estate. Many who signed up were able to explore the estate for the first time, but many more came from the local community and were delighted to have an event like this on their doorstep.

“On the estate, we already hold fitness classes and offer sports facilities for the local community and run programmes as part of our Integrated Health and Wellbeing initiative. Group numbers have increased at our weekly 5k running club every Saturday morning, which led to us setting up the 10k, and we’re delighted with the response.”
