What is it: Laurie Burnie and Phil Papworth have been running The Clachan Inn for the last five years. In that time they have turned this village inn into a multi-award winning venue. It’s located in the village of St John's Town of Dalry on the edge of the Galloway Forest Park, half way along the Southern Upland Way. As well as a cosy pub and restaurant they also have six rooms if you want the full Clachan Inn experience.
Interesting fact: In April this year The Clachan Inn won overall winner at the CAMRA Pub of the Year Awards for Dumfries, beating some amazing places. This isn't the first time they’ve been nominated, after getting close to winning in 2014 and 2015. As well as this award they also won The Friendliest Pub award in 2016 at The Scottish Thistle Awards. And after visiting, I can confirm that the awards are warranted – you definitely get a warm welcome here.
Verdict: The Clachan is a traditional country pub. Many claim to be a traditional country pub but here they tick all the boxes. A building which is packed with charm and character both inside and out, friendly knowledgeable staff, locally sourced ingredients, great beer and drinks offering all under one roof in an attractive village. Combine this with owners who are constantly trying to introduce new dishes and drinks then you have a recipe for success.
Drink: Laurie and Phil have made sure that it’s not just about the food here by putting together a great offering of Scottish drinks brands from all over the country. From rotating beer on tap, single malt whisky to an extensive gin selection there is pretty much everything you would need here to keep everyone happy on a night out.
Food: You’ll find favourites like hearty homemade pies and traditional fish and chips but you’ll also find innovative dishes that offer something a little more interesting. If you’re game, try their wood pigeon and foraged wild garlic and poached pineapple with spicy pink peppercorns.
Prices: Good value for money here to keep the locals and tourists coming back for more.
Children: Kid friendly, with a good menu for the wee ones, so it is great for big family days out.
Alfresco: I am not sure if there is more space out the back but there is a few benches out front to catch some rays on the those rare sunny days.
Perfect for: A wee day trip down to Dumfries and Galloway with the family to experience some good old fashioned Scottish hospitality and locally-sourced food.
Avoid if: I don’t see many reasons why you would unless you live on the other side of the country but if you are passing and don’t pop in you’re missing a trick.
