THE nights may be getting darker and the temperature colder but Victoria Park City of Glasgow Athletic Club is keeping the pace up.

Based out of Scotstoun Stadium, the club is celebrating reaching a new high of 650 members thanks to a new approach to the activities on offer.

Although open to all, traditionally the club has catered to young people and has been successful in training track athletes to compete at the highest level. Now, thanks to the formation of a road running group, the club has welcomed a whole raft of new members - many of them parents of the young track athletes.

Gordon Innes, secretary of the club, said: “Our road runners group is open to anyone for all four sessions each week - and each evening’s plan is tailored to reflect the running level of those who attend.

"So whether you’re just looking for some company as you’re training for long distances, or aiming to start out with a 5k goal, everyone is welcome.

"Our leaders and coaches are among the best in the city and they’re all ready to help.

"So come along to Scotstoun Stadium on any weeknight to start a free month’s trial and let us help you achieve your health and fitness goals.”

In May of this year, the club funded 14 volunteers to attend a Jog Leader course, and introduced four evening run sessions a week Monday to Thursday. Since then the group has gone from strength to strength, attracting 30 runners on some nights.

A measure of the club’s success this year was the 45 medals won by their track and field athletes who competed at the Scottish Championships in August.

The club enjoys a partnership with Glasgow Life, meaning they can use the stadium’s athletics facilities to train four evenings a week.

Councillor David McDonald, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and chairman of Glasgow Life, said: “Victoria Park Athletic Club has an impressive history and reputation for success - and that has only been achieved by a willingness to welcome members of all abilities, and to work hard at everything they do.

"With some of the most enthusiastic coaches and volunteers in Glasgow, the club’s running group offers the perfect opportunity for those looking to maintain their health and fitness - or for those looking for something new to keep them active during the winter months."
