A LOT of people have had a go at Alfredo Morelos about his temperament in the wake of his latest ordering off in the defeat to Aberdeen at Ibrox last week.

I accept that his conduct is often petulant and unnecessary and his challenge on Graeme Shinnie on Wednesday night was certainly needless.

He had been booked earlier in the game so he could have few complaints about being red carded.

But I just worry if you sit Morelos down and tell him he can’t be as passionate or fiery then you will lose a lot of what makes him tick as a footballer.

He reminds me a lot – not in terms of ability, but in terms of his personality – of Luis Suarez.

The Barcelona and Uruguay striker went through a phase where he got into a lot of trouble as a result of his ill-discipline.

He obviously had to screw the nut a bit and not get involved in all of the nonsense that he was doing before.

But if you take away that hunger and desire then you lose a lot of what makes him a truly great player. The same thing applies to Alfredo for me.

I think a lot of people forget he is just a kid. He is still only 22. He will keep on making mistakes, but he will learn.

Let’s not get away from the fact that he has been brilliant for Rangers this season, including in Europe.

He is a massive player for Steven and taking the fire out of him would jeopardise him being as important in future.

Morelos’s sending off was another controversial refereeing decision. Every single week match officials are getting lambasted about their decisions.

I think VAR can only be a good thing in Scottish football. It will reduce the number of errors they make. But I think going full-time would help our referees more.
