SEVEN pupils from Hermitage Academy and host Lomond School overcame their nerves to take part in the hotly contested Helensburgh round of the annual UK-wide Rotary Young Musician of the Year competition recently.

Two Lomond pupils were victorious, Molly Keating in the vocalist section and clarinet player Emily Shaw in the instrumental section.

They now go forward to represent Helensburgh in the West of Scotland final to be held at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow on Sunday, March 18, which is open to the public.

The local event was organised by Colin Shannon of the Helensburgh Garelochside club, assisted by Reay Mackay of the Helensburgh club, and held by kind permission of Johanna Urquhart, the principal of Lomond School, and the audience enjoyed an outstanding evening’s entertainment.

Adjudication was carried out by Sian Winstanley and Tony Moffat, who praised all the young musicians for their level of performance.

Norman Quirk, president of the Helensburgh Garelochside club, presented the winners’ certificates and medals to Molly and Emily.
