An SNP MEP has said that the timing is not yet right for a second Scottish independence referendum.

Speaking on Good Morning Scotland, Alyn Smith said that it is not yet time to "push the button" on indyref2, as the UK's ultimate position with the EU is still unclear.

He said that despite the "seething frustration" across the country about how Scotland is being treated over Brexit, independence supporters must be ca'canny when it comes to a referendum.

He told BBC Scotland: "There is a seething frustration across the whole of Scotland about how Scotland is being treated over Brexit, given our clear vote to remain and how we have been treated since.

"Within the SNP and the Yes movement, yes there are number of folks who think we should just go for independence now. I am not of that view."

"There are practical questions about what the independence proposition is going to be, vis-a-vis the EU and vis-a-vis the rest of the UK, and until we see what the end point of the UK is likely to be relative to the EU, then there are practical questions we're not ready with yet."

When asked on whether a second independence vote could happen in 2019, Mr Smith said: "Everything's possible but I don't think we're ready to press the button on a independence referendum yet, because there is too many moving parts to Brexit."

It comes as Theresa May announced during PMQs that the SNP are "out of touch" with what the Scottish people want.

The Herald:

Responding to a question from Conservative MP Stephen Kerr, the Prime Minister said: "Scotland held a referendum in 2014 -it was legal, it was fair, it was decisive and the people clearly voted for Scotland to remain part of the UK.

"But more than that, at the last general election the people of Scotland again sent a very clear message that they do not want a second divisive referendum.

"But the SNP sadly are out of touch with the people of Scotland and they haven't yet heard that message."
