An actor from the US TV show Outlander has paid tribute to a "great" fan after he learned she had passed away.

Esther Connolly from Kilmarnock had been a fan of the Starz television series for a number of years.

Steven Cree, who plays Ian Murray in the series, took to Twitter on Wednesday to express his sadness at the news, along with a picture of the pair.

He wrote: "Saddened today to hear of the passing of a great Outlander fan, Esther Connolly.

"Esther was also one of Ayrshire’s finest, Kilmarnock born and bred!!

"This photo was when I met Esther in Edinburgh a couple of years ago.

"You will be missed, Esther."

Cree, who is also from Kilmarnock, posted the touching tribute to his 53,000 followers, prompting well wishes and condolences from across the world.

Lisa Mundie wrote: "Oh no, Esther was a treasure! She will be sorely missed..."

Another posted: "So sorry and very saddened to hear about Esther's passing.

"She was a lovely person and will be missed. Rest In Peace Esther Connolly."
