Alex Salmond has appeared in court charged with two attempted rapes and multiple counts of sexual assault. 

Mr Salmond faced a total of 14 charges when he appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday.

He was charged with two counts of attempted rape, nine counts of sexual assault, two of indecent assault and one breach of the peace.

Mr Salmond made no formal plea in court and was released on bail pending further examination. 

Speaking outside court Mr Salmond made a statement insisting that he is "innocent of any criminality" stating that he would defend himself "to the utmost". 

Mr Salmond was released on bail. His next date in court is still to be set.
