The coldest temperature recorded in the UK for seven years was in Scotland.
Residents of Braemar in Aberdeenshire shivered in a temperature of -14.4C on Thursday morning.
That's the chilliest since -15.6C was recorded in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, in February 2012.
Police Scotland have issued a 'travel with caution' warning as Met Office yellow weather warnings for snow and ice remain in place for eastern parts of Scotland running till 1pm on Friday.
Until the big chill in Aberdeenshire, it had been thought that Loch Glascarnoch, near Garve, in Wester Ross, was the Britain's coldest place as temperatures plummeted to -13.6C overnight into Thursday.
The freezing conditions have resulted in two high schools, 11 primary schools and seven nurseries shutting in the Highlands.
The schools affected are mostly in Wester Ross and Skye.

Police Scotland said its warning over snow and ice covered the Northern Isles, Highland, Aberdeenshire and the eastern seaboard.
The areas likely to be affected include the Scottish Borders, East Lothian, Aberdeenshire, and much of the Highlands and Islands including Orkney and Shetland.
Inspector David Hynd said: "Warnings from the Met Office indicate that icy patches can be expected; and lying snow of between one and three cm. could also be experienced.
"Drivers should therefore exercise extra caution while this is in force, which is between 6pm tonight and noon tomorrow.
"If you are travelling you should ensure you and your vehicle are adequately prepared for the conditions making sure you have sufficient fuel and supplies such as warm clothing, food and water in the event you are delayed for several hours. Charge your mobile phone and plan your route as well as alternative routes."
