A petition calling for the O2 ABC to be saved has attracted nearly 1,500 signatures.

The campaign, launched by a concerned resident, is asking for the Sauchiehall Street building to be saved.

It reads: "The building appears to be structurally sound. Please consider saving the building and turning it back into an excellent music venue. We don't want to see more student flats."

An initial target of 1,500 has almost been reached less than 24 hours after it was set.

Supporters have voiced their concern over the potential demolition.

John Morton said: "Great architecture a much loved building history. More than enough reasons to save this iconic building from lazy developers."

Robert Ross added: "Iconic music venues are few and far between. This is one of Glasgow's best."

Another signer, Joanne Gray commented: "An important historic building and a great mid-sized venue that holds memories for so many people in the city and beyond. It would be terrible for this to be demolished."

As previously reported by the Evening Times, an application has been submitted the demolish the entire building.

The plans are due to go before Glasgow City Council in the coming weeks.
