WOMEN'S football in Scotland is in mourning after the death of former Glasgow City forward Kat Lindner.

The Scottish champions' fixture at Rangers was postponed as a mark of respect for the 39-year-old, who was also an academic and author.

Glasgow City issued a statement last night saying they were devastated to announce that Lindner passed away on Saturday. She was the long time partner of the club's co-founder Laura Montgomery, who is also Hibernian's head of sales and sponsorship.

Born in Munich, Lindner joined FFC Frankfurt when she was 16, A German youth internationalist, she won a league and cup double with the club, which is one of the best in Europe and has won the Women's Champions League four times.

After moving to the United States on a scholarship, Lindner joined Glasgow City in 2005 when she came to Scotland to complete a PhD in film studies at Stirling University. She retired after the 2011 Scottish Cup final, having scored 128 goals in 173 games.

During her six years the club won five league titles, two Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

Many of the current Scotland squad, including captain Rachel Corsie, were members of the same all-conquering Glasgow City side. The club statement said: “Kat was widely regarded as one of the greatest ever players in the Scottish women's game and she was instrumental in the club's amazing run of success.”

Having completed her PhD, Linder went on to work at Stirling University as an academic. She had a book called Film Bodies published in 2017.
