A CROSS-PARTY group of Scottish politicians has claimed a People’s Vote on Brexit is fast becoming the most likely way out of the logjam at Westminster.

Labour MSP Kezia Dugdale, LibDem MP Christine Jardine, Green MSP Andy Wightman and SNP MP Tommy Sheppard said it would soon be the “only option left standing”.

One proposal is a choice between Theresa May’s deal and staying in the EU.

If the Brexit talks go down to the wire, a “Put it to the People March” in favour of another referendum will be held in London on March 23.

At a press conference in Edinburgh, Mr Wightman acknowledged no Scottish Tories had yet spoken out, but claimed at least two Tory MSPs also privately backed a People’s Vote.

He said: “ A People’s Vote, with the option to remain in the EU, is the best way to clarify what it is that the people want, following two and a half years of debate and negotiations that have been conducted in bad faith towards an electorate that was, and remains, deeply divided.”

Ms Dugdale said: “I believe a People’s Vote is more likely than ever, it just requires a few more influential people to realise that, faced with May’s deal and no deal, the best thing they can do by their constituents is to back a People’s Vote.”

Ms Jardine said: “The Government needs to stop kicking the can and waken up to the fact there is only one way ahead. They can only break the logjam in parliament by going back to the people and asking if the best deal they can negotiate is what the people actually want.”

Mr Sheppard added: “The Prime Minister can’t get her deal through parliament. The EU27 have made it clear that they won’t alter that deal in substance. The time is ripe for us to join to secure a People’s Vote with the option to remain on the ballot paper.”
