THERESA May has told voters “I am on your side” as she berated MPs for not agreeing to her proposed Brexit plan and said it was “high time” they did so.

In a personal televised message from Downing St the Prime Minister said the proposed delay to Brexit was a “matter of great personal regret”.

She said she was sure the public had “had enough” of the infighting, political games and arcane procedural rows.

"You want this stage of the Brexit process to be over and done with. I agree. I am on your side. It is now time for MPs to decide."

Her remarks came after Donald Tusk delivered an ultimatum to MPs: back Mrs May’s plan next week or Brussels will not grant a short Brexit delay.

The consequence of the European Council President’s message is if Westminster does not comply, Britain faces crashing out of the EU Friday week without a withdrawal agreement.

The PM has asked for a delay until June 30 although the European Commission is arguing for May 23; the day the European elections begin. The EU27 has to agree unanimously to grant Britain an extension.

At PMQs, Mrs May faced opposition calls to resign as she castigated MPs for having “indulged…for too long” on Brexit.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Corbyn abandoned a cross-party meeting the PM had organised with opposition leaders over the presence of former Labour MP Chuka Umunna, who joined The Independent Group, because he is not a party leader.
