A worker has been killed after he was "crushed between two lorries" at a Hermes parcel sorting centre.

The 44-year-old man - named by a former colleague as David Kennedy - died after a lorry which was due to be emptied slid down an incline leading to the unloading dock.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating the accident which took place at the Hermes depot in Eurocentral, near Motherwell, on Tuesday.

Former workers at the warehouse said the Mr Kennedy was "the best guy you could meet".

One former colleague, a 22-year-old, said Mr Kennedy was a married dad-of-two from Clydebank, who was a keen family man and a car enthusiast.

He added: "He was a brilliant guy and really funny. He was the best guy you could meet.

"He loved his kids. He loved his cars. He would go to meetings for the cars.

"The lorry was on the slope and it came sliding down. It slid down towards him and crushed him.

"The lorry crushed him up to another lorry. He got jammed in between the two lorries.

"There's not a lot of space so the lorries are quite crammed in.

"Everyone left work and went to see him at the hospital, but he had a stroke and his brain shut down.

"He was a family man with an older child and also a nine-year-old."

A Police Scotland spokesman said: "A 44-year-old man has died after sustaining serious injuries while working at an industrial premises in Holytown, Motherwell, on Tuesday March 19.

"The incident occurred around 10.30pm.

"The injured man was taken to the University Hospital in Wishaw and later transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow, where he later died.

"His family is aware.

"A joint Police Scotland and Health and Safety Executive investigation is ongoing. and a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal."

A spokeswoman for the HSE said: "HSE is aware and working with Police Scotland to investigate the circumstances of the incident."

It is understood the enormous depot handles deliveries for Hermes, Amazon and Next.

A spokeswoman for Hermes said: "We are deeply saddened to confirm that one of our employees has died in hospital following a serious incident at our site in Eurocentral in Scotland.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

"We are working closely with the relevant authorities, as part of their investigations, and are providing support and counselling for our onsite team."
