Actress Emma Corrin has been cast as Lady Diana in the fourth season of Netflix's The Crown. 

The news was revealed on Twitter yesterday but has since been deleted from the official Crown account. 

How old is Emma Corrin?

The 23-year-old from Tunbridge Wells in Kent is a relative newcomer to acting, having recently graduated from Cambridge University.

In 2018, she made an appearance in Grantchester portraying a character called Esther Carter.

Upcoming credits include the yet-to-be-released movie Misbehaviour, about a group of women who plot to disrupt the 1970 Miss World beauty contest in London – which also stars Keeley Hawes, Jessie Buckley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Keira Knightley.

The actress described the news as ‘surreal’, saying: "Princess Diana was an icon and her effect on the world was profound and inspiring.

"To explore her through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity and I will strive to do her justice."

The Crown's creator, Peter Morgan, said of the actress: "Emma is a brilliant talent who immediately captivated us when she came in for the part of Diana Spencer.

When will she make her debut as Lady Diana?

Fans will need to wait a while to see Emma Corrin as Lady Diana is not expected to feature in series 4 of The Crown. 

Season three, which will debut in late 2019, will see Olivia Colman take over Claire Foy's role as Queen Elizabeth and focus on the Harold Wilson era between 1964-1970.

Netflix's content chief Ted Sarandos has previously said the plan is for the show to run for six seasons, spanning the Queen's entire life.

Princess Diana died in a car accident in August 1997.
