The one-year-old girl who fell from the window of a third-floor flat has died in hospital.

The toddler fell from a block on Dumbarton Road in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, on Wednesday.

She was taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow, but has since died from her injuries.

Police Scotland appealed for witnesses following the incident, near Boquhanran Road at around 2.10pm.

Officers said there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

A report about the girl’s fall will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Detective Inspector Steve Martin said an inquiry into the incident was under way and urged motorists who were passing by at the time to check their dash-cams for footage which could help officers during their investigation.

He said: “The little girl’s family have been left devastated by the loss of their child and we are investigating the circumstances surrounding what happened.

“I continue to appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time, who may have rendered assistance to the family or emergency services, to please get in touch.”

DI Martin added: “I would also ask any motorists who were in the vicinity to check their dash-cams in case they have captured anything which may be of significance.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the family protection unit, which is based at Clydebank Police Station, on 101, quoting incident number 1888 of April 10.

Shocked locals, meanwhile, have expressed their devastation following news that the girl had passed away in hospital less than 24 hours after falling from the flat window.

One neighbour sobbed while laying a pink teddy and flowers as a touching tribute to the child.

And a shopkeeper who works at the U-Save groceries store on Dumbarton Road said she believed the fall was an accident, adding: “Everyone is in complete shock at the news.

“The mum of the little girl who died is a lovely, caring lady and she’s a regular customer here.

“The windows at the front of the flats don’t have safety locks apparently and that’s how she must have fallen.

“This has clearly been some kind of freak accident.”

It is believed that the child’s mother also has a 12-year-old daughter.

A neighbour said: “Her mum will be absolutely devastated as this was a complete accident.

“The whole community is upset and we are all in shock.” The neighbour added: “We need to show her family some compassion at this awful time for them.”
