A dead humpback whale calf has washed up on a beach in East Lothian.

The whale, thought to be a juvenile due to its size, washed up on Tyninghame Beach on Tuesday morning. It is thought to have died only a few hours previously.

A spokeswoman from East Lothian Council told The Herald online that the cause of death is not known but the 9-metre-long whale was tangled in rope.

People who reported sightings of a whale earlier this month in the Firth of Forth indicated that it appeared to have a buoy attached to it.

East Lothian Council's Countryside Rangers have erected a cordon and advised members of the public to keep their distance for health and safety reasons.
