Greg Stewart has been released by Birmingham City in a development which should pave the way for a move to Rangers.

The 29-year-old, who has been on loan at Kilmarnock and Aberdeen this season, has been in advanced talks about joining the Ibrox club in the summer.

Stewart was an integral part of Kilmarnock’s push at the top of the Ladbrokes Premiership during the first half of the season with eight goals in 16 games but has struggled to replicate that during a second temporary stint at Aberdeen. The Pittodrie side can still overhaul Kilmarnock and pinch third place and a European spot on the final day of the season this weekend.

Asked recently on the growing speculation surrounding a move to Rangers, Stewart said: “I just want to finish the season strong here (at Aberdeen). The summer will take care of itself. I just want to focus on getting that third place."

Rangers have already announced the arrivals of Jordan Jones and Jake Hastie and Stewart is expected to be the next brick in Steven Gerrard’s re-building programme.
