Calls for improvements to road safety and additional cycle lanes have been made following the death of a cyclist at a busy Glasgow crossroads.

The woman was cycling on Pollokshaws Road, at the junction with Nithsdale Drive, when she was struck by a lorry around 9.15am yesterday.

Police confirmed she died at the scene, but the lorry driver was uninjured.

City councillors have now said more needs to be done to protect cyclists on Glasgow’s roads and “lessons must be learned”.

Green party councillor for Pollokshields, Jon Molyneux, told the Evening Times he has written to George Gillespie, director of the neighbourhoods and sustainability department, Glasgow City Council (GCC), asking him to look into what needs to be done to make Pollokshaws Road safe for cyclists.

Mr Molyneux said:”It’s a horrific incident.

“I actually try and avoid that stretch of road because (you’re) particularly vulnerable as a cyclist along that stretch.

“My thoughts go out to all those affected and I hope the police inquiry is concluded swiftly and there are then opportunities to improve safety for road users.”

Labour councillor for south side, Soryia Siddique, said the incident “further emphasises the importance of road safety”. She added: “”I have asked Glasgow City Council to review all option to improve road safety around the area. Lessons must be learned.”

“I am sure the whole chamber will wish to join me in extending my sincere sympathies to the family and friends of the cyclist who tragically lost their life in Glasgow this morning,” she said.

Tributes from members of the public poured in for the woman, who eyewitnesses said was in her early 20s, following the news.

John James said: “The council needs to step up and have more separate cycle lanes. Not a bus, taxi and cycle lane… Thoughts are with this woman’s family.”

While Aisma Batool said: “Very sad news. RIP . Thinking of her family.”

A council spokesman said: “This was a tragic incident that remains under investigation by the police.

“It would be in appropriate to comment any further at this time.”
