The Scotland breakaway forward went into hospital immediately after the World Cup for a "clear-out" operation in the hope of staving off more serious long-term problems.

Callam should be back in action in about a month, which makes it doubtful if he will be in the European shake-up.

He said: "According to the surgeon, Gordon Mackay, I could have left it until the end of the season, but by then there was the probability the hole could have got bigger and resulted in me being out for three to four months."

Utility back Andy Easson is also recovering from an ankle operation, which will keep him sidelined until the New Year.
