Glaswegians have expressed their shock and upset after a fire ripped through a derelict university building in Glasgow.

The Jordanhill campus, which was once part of Strathclyde University, was being converted into luxury flats when the blaze took hold on Saturday.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said 18 firefighters were in attendance at the height of the fire which broke out just after 4pm yesterday.

It appears the 1960s extension to the listed building was the area on fire.

The fire has now been brought under control, but crews remain at the scene to dampen down the building.

Plumes of smoke were visible from the west end building across the city and Glaswegians have reacted to the news of another historic educational building in the city going up in flames.

Ewan Mowat tweeted: "Gutted to see this. Spent three great years at Jordanhill Campus and I still get nostalgic when I see the buildings in the distance on train journeys."

While Iain Hallahan said: "Actual gutted about this. Loved my time at Jordanhill - felt far more at home there than I ever had on the main Strathclyde campus. Sad end for the buildings there."

Claire tweeted seeing the blaze was "unnerving".

Charlene McDermid said: "So sad to see Jordanhill campus like this."

The fire comes after the Glasgow School of Art suffered two devastating fires, the first in May 2014 and the second in June last year as it was undergoing a £35m restoration.
