A documentary team filmed the murder trial of Margaret Fleming.

Avril Jones, 58 and Edward Cairney, 77 have now been found guilty of murdering the 19-year-old woman at their home in Inverkip.

Glasgow-based Firecrest Films were given permission by the head of Scotland’s judiciary Lord Carloway, and the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service to film the proceedings of the case against Edward Cairney and Avril Jones, which lasted seven weeks.

Those involved in the case before Lord Matthews were told about the filming of the proceedings.

Margaret, who would now be 38, was reported missing in October, 2016 from her home in Inverkip but has not been seen since December 1999.

Jurors took just three and a half hours to reach a majority verdict on all charges.

The pair have been warned they could face life sentences when they return to court in July, and have been remanded in custody until then.

Firecrest Films, who make high profile documentaries, series and features for major broadcasters, are creating the film for the BBC.

The production is believed to be the first created in a Scottish court since the television documentary The Murder Trial which was shown on Channel 4 in 2013.

That documentary featured the trial of Nat Fraser who was convicted of murdering his wife Arlene in Elgin, Moray in 1998.

The documentary, which won a 2014 British Academy Television Award, was only the second time that footage from a British murder trial was broadcast on television.

A Judicial Office for Scotland spokesperson added: “An application submitted by Firecrest Films Ltd was approved to broadcast the trial of Avril Jones and Edward Cairney as a documentary production to be aired after the court proceedings conclude under the terms of the Protocol on Recording and Broadcasting of Proceedings in the High Court of Justiciary and the Court of Session, which is available on the Judiciary of Scotland website.”
