TRUSTEES kicked off charities for wrongdoing should be named and shamed on a public register, respondents to a consultation on overhauling Scottish charity law have said.

Almost four-fifths of respondents to an SNP Government consultation on updating the 2005 law approved of the idea.

There was also overwhelming support for making charities more transparent through the universal publication of their accounts and other information.

At present, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (Oscr) only publishes the accounts of charities with an income of more than £25,000.

There was also support for beefing up the enforcement powers of Oscr, including on the automatic disqualification of errant trustees, and maintaining a detailed database of trustees.

More than 300 individuals, charities and other organisations responded to proposals to improve the availability of information about charity activities and operations.

The changes are aimed at improving trust and confidence in the sector.

Communities Secretary Aileen Campbell said: “We will fully consider all the points raised, including engaging with those who called for wider changes to the regulations. Collaborative work with the third sector and other key stakeholders will continue as we develop and refine the proposals.”
