AN energy company is offering a £5,000 reward for information that leads to the capture of vandals who deliberately set fire to a substation.

We reported on Monday night how homes and businesses in the Cambuslang and Rutherglen areas were left without power for hours after the incident.

Fire crews dashed to Burns Terrace in Cambuslang, close to the India Palms restaurant, to tackle the serious blaze at around 6.30pm.

The fire caused some 2,500 homes and businesses to lose power into the small hours on Tuesday.

The substation was completely destroyed and caused £50,000 worth of damage.

Guy Jefferson, customer service director at SP Energy Networks, said: “This was an extremely dangerous act and whoever was behind this vandalism clearly doesn't care about the consequences.

"The location of the fire is in a residential area and close to a number of homes.

"Given the time of day this incident happened, there could also have been children playing nearby. It beggars belief that anyone could risk the lives of local people in this way.
