Holidaymakers are facing delays after British Airways  suffered a major computer failure  at airports across the UK.

Travellers have taken to social media to complain about long queues and flight delays with disruption and "total chaos" reported at airports including Glasgow, Gatwick, Heathrow and Manchester.

There are reports of at least one plane grounded at Glasgow Airport due to the ongoing problems.

One holidaymaker took to Twitter to report that the pilot was unable to get data at Gatwick Airport.

Other passengers reported being stuck on board planes for three hours as they waited for information about their take off.

British Airways said it is reverting to manual systems for check in at airports.  It said customers should allow extra time at airports.

One traveller told of how passengers had been stuck on a runway at Glasgow Airport for an hour.

In a statement the airline said: "We are experiencing some systems problems this morning which are affecting check-in and flight departures.

"Please check ba.com and manage my booking for the latest flight information and allow extra time at the airport."

It said the issue was with two separate systems - one which deals with online check in, the other that deals with flight departures.

The problems are affecting flights across its network but not at every airport, it added.

One Twitter user said: "@britishairways what is going on with your flights this morning, Glasgow Gatwick still not departing and no announcement ☹️"

Another added: "Total chaos at Gatwick. System failure?"

One passenger warned fellow travellers to "set off early", tweeting: "Major computer failure with British Airways at Gatwick this morning. This is the queue for the queue at check in. Currently stuck on ground cos pilot can't get data. Set off early if you have a flight."

A number of passengers have also complained of missing connecting flights due to the issues.

One posted: "IT meltdown (again). Sat on tarmac at LHW, already missed my connection screwing up months of planning and wasted £’000s.

"When I do arrive, I will have to just fly home again. BA is a complete catastrophe & I will never fly with them again."

It is the latest issue to hit British Airways after this year facing a multi-million pound fine over a hack of their customer's data.

It is understood to be the third major IT outage for BA in two years after 672 flights were cancelled over a May Bank holiday in 2017 and another glitch in July last year.
