A British man has died after getting into difficulties on a hiking trip in the Costa del Sol.

The 62-year-old, who has not been named, is reported to have been trying to reach the summit of the Pico de la Concha in Marbella when he set off on Saturday morning.

He alerted his family by WhatsApp that he was in trouble that afternoon, sparking a helicopter search by a local mountain rescue crew, according to a local media report.

The helicopter search was called off at around 8.30pm due to lack of light, Spanish newspaper Sur reported, but a team continued on foot.

The man was eventually found dead at 9am on Sunday morning in a remote area of the Sierra Blanca mountain range.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Marbella and are in contact with the local authorities."
