RAIL services between Glasgow and Edinburgh have been hit by flooding on a key rail route.

Scotrail said that some services were being delayed or cancelled after water began to rise in the Winchburgh Tunnel in West Lothian.

Torrential rain on Sunday over the Central Belt compounded earlier downpours on Saturday which affected travel across the country.

The incident is the second time the tunnel has flooded this month, with engineers working through the night last week to clear floodwater after 60 per cent of August's rainfall fell within three hours "completely overwhelming the infrastructure".

Trains were reduced to 5mph going through the tunnel this morning, with services between Glasgow Queen St and Edinburgh via Falkirk High and Cumbernauld affected.

Also delayed or revised are trains running bewteen Edinburgh and Dunblane.

Replacement bus services are running between Stirling, Alloa & Dunblane, and between Stirling and Dunblane.

Journeys via Falkirk Grahamston may be terminated there and services between Edinburgh and Milngavie via Airdrie will be terminated at Bathgate

Scotrail took to social media to inform early commuters of the delays this morning, saying: "We've had reports of flooding in Winchburgh tunnel. For safety reasons, trains will run at a reduced speed.
